How to create a video resume: Your guide to the perfect video in 2024

Imagine you stand out with your next job application not only with words, but also visually! That’s exactly what resume videos allow you to do – there’s hardly a more personalized way to introduce yourself to your dream employer!

Maybe you’re thinking now: Isn’t this just for 20-year-old YouTubers?

Nope.

Whether you’re a marketing person, a software developer or a digital IT consultant, a well-made video resume increases your chances of standing out from the gray mass of PDF applications that recruiters receive day in and day out.

And the best thing about it? You don’t need a Hollywood budget or an Oscar-worthy performance to impress!

In this article, we’ll give you tips on how best to prepare, in wich cases video resumes are NOT suitable and how to create a video that is not only professional but also authentic. So, get your camera ready!

What is video resume?

Video resumes are your chance not just to tell your story, but to show who you are and what makes you special. In this short but concise video, you can establish a direct and emotional connection with your potential employer.

Show who you are, how you think and work and what makes you special. It’s not about ticking off a list of skills, but about giving an insight into your personality and the way you work. After all, personal branding is becoming increasingly important, not only for companies but also for applicants! Your video resume can open the door to your dream job.

In other words: video resumes are your chance to show recruiters that you are not only good on paper, but that you are also convincing in reality.

Who should use video resumes?

Video resumes are not just for the creative minds in marketing. In fact, they can be a real game changer in almost any industry. Especially if you work in a field where personality and communication skills count, a video resume can be your entry ticket.

You don’t have to be super creative

Sure, video resumes are almost standard in creative professions. But think further: in other areas too, such as sales or IT, a video like this can show that you are more than just another CV.

Let´s take sales for example: Where else can you prove that you can sell well? 😆 Exactly – with a sales video – for yourself!

Are you the right person for a video resume?

Before you jump ahead and create one, think about whether it suits you and the position you are applying for. Are you someone who enjoys being in front of the camera and loves realizing ideas visually? Great, then go for it! If you’re more the introvert and don’t even like having your photography taken, the traditional way might be best for you.

It’s important that you feel comfortable and remain authentic. Otherwise, people will really notice that you are “forcing yourself” into this format and no one will benefit from that.

You might also consider whether the video format fits in with the corporate culture. Not everyone will accept a video format – but that doesn’t mean you can’t take an unconventional approach just because no one else has done it before you.

In some industries or with certain companies, a video resume can be particularly well received, in others less so. It is therefore best to do your research first and check the LinkedIn company profile or website. How does the company come across? Conservative or modern? What impression do you have of the team?

Don’t forget: Without a convincing CV, even the best video resume won’t get you anywhere. Read here how to create a CV that won’t be completely ignored!

How to create a convincing video resume

Shooting video resume can seem really daunting at first and come with many challenges. But don’t worry – it’s easier than you think. The key is to prepare and focus on what really matters: your own story.

Preparation is everything

Before you switch on the camera, take some time to plan. What do you want to say about yourself? Which aspects of your personality and your professional career should you focus on? Remember that your video is a supplement to your CV – it should show new facets of your personality and skills and not just be the audioversion of your CV.

Content and structure of your video resume

Your video should be structured and straight to the point. Make sure your video is no longer than two minutes – you don’t want to lose the viewer’s attention. Ideally, it should last between 30 and 90 seconds!

Start with a brief introduction of yourself and then give 2-3 pointers why you would be a good fit for the role. Preferably even with direct suggestions on how you would go about solving certain challenges. Extra tip: If you’ve found common ground with the hiring manager or future teammates on social media, bring that up. It will show that you have really done your research and you will definitely stand out. Because that’s what video resumes are all about – standing out in a positive way!

If you like, you can talk about 2-3 success stories that you had at other companies. The rule here is: no buzzwords but show specifically how you have achieved results.

It’s great if you can integrate social proof. Do you have testimonials from colleagues or a previous employer? Bring them in. You can easily integrate them with video editing tools such as Canva or Invideo. You can even find numerous templates there that you can use for your video resume.

At the end, don’t forget a CTA like “Let’s talk!”

What clothing is best a video resume?

Before you sit down in front of the camera, take a look at the company profiles on social media. What kind of profile pictures do the employees have? Is there a common employer branding? If so, copy this in your outfit to come across as more relevant, as if you were already part of the team. Super hack!

You don’t have to set up a studio

You don’t need high-end equipment – a good smartphone camera and a quiet place with sufficient light are all you need. It is important that the video is technically sound: make sure you have good sound, a clear picture and stable camera work (you can use a mini tripod, for example). If you are familiar with editing programs, you can enhance your video with simple edits.

Your set-up: Make sure you have a neutral background, preferably daylight or generally good light.

Be yourself

Yes, even if it sounds a bit cheesy: the most important thing about your application video is that you remain authentic. Don’t try to be someone else – recruiters want to get to know you as you really are. Your authenticity makes your video unique and personal. And they’ll quickly notice if it’s you or if you’re trying to be someone else!

No-go’s for video resumes

  • Avoid appearing too theatrical or exaggerated. Let´s leave that to telenovela actors, right?
  • Poor lighting, bad sound or a shaky picture can unfortunately make your video completely unusable. Always make sure the technical quality is good, then you’re already halfway there.
  • Avoid being too generic or vague. Your video should be specific and tailored to the position you are seeking.

Now that you’ve created your video resume, it’s time to put it to good use, right? A good video can enhance your application enormously, but it depends on how and where you present it.

You can integrate your video resume seamlessly into your overall application. Include the link to your video in your CV, ideally at the beginning or end of each document. This will ensure that it is seen by recruiters.
